The Gracious Guest

With the holidays around the corner and parties pending,
it’s time to talk about the always baffling
gift for the host.

When it comes to the hostess gift,
I was taught to “never arrive empty handed”
That rule definitely still applies today!
The modern host gifting doesn’t need to be a difficult task,
simply consider a couple of suggestions.

Presentation is important! Consider an upgraded
gift bag rather than the standard gift bag.
These are from The Martha Stewart Collection.

Artisanal Touch ~
If you have the time, a simple gift from the kitchen
brings a distinct elegance. It signals to the host
that you didn’t stop by the grocery store on the drive over;
you took the time to create a thoughtful,
gracious gift.

I made a very simple roasted red pepper sauce
as well as basil pesto. The combination of the red and green
fives the gift a holiday feel.

A Curated Gift ~
If you are not the person to create a gift
from the kitchen, a gourmet food item is
always a great option. Examples of
curated gourmet food items would be
an artisanal olive oil, specialty condimants,
and local small batch selections from
the farmers market.
To make it a curated gift, select a food item that
suites the host taste and style.

I am not discounting the traditional bottle of wine,
or flowers. Both are perfectly lovely gifts. What I am discouraging is the re-gifted
coffee mug, the dollar store holiday item, or the
grocery store candy.

The host gift isn’t about cost ~ the host gift is
a gracious gesture of gratitude
for having been invited into the hostess’ home.

Williams Sonoma, Anthropology, Neiman Marcus,
Local boutiques and Farmer’s Markets
offer wonderful gourmet gift items.
In fact, Home Goods also carry a large selection.

Always attach a handwritten tag or notecard.

When bringing a gift from the kitchen,
please add practical details to your note.
Storage, shelf life, allergens.
